Our colleagues Stephan Tukker and Barend de Jong, together with Gijs Kurstjens and Douwe Yska, conducted a risk analysis on the impact of beavers on dykes in the Netherlands. Their research shows that beavers, while valuable for biodiversity, can pose a threat to water safety in low-lying areas. Stephan and Barend wrote an informative article on this subject.
The probability of beaver grazing in the flood defences of the Schielands Hoogheemraadschap and
the Krimpenerwaard
The beaver, once extinct in the Netherlands, has made a spectacular recovery since the first releases in 1988. Today, more than 6,000 beavers live in our country. Although they contribute to biodiversity in many places by creating wetlands and fish forests, they pose a threat to water safety in low-lying areas below sea level.
A risk analysis conducted by Stephan Tukker, Barend de Jong, Douwe Yska and Gijs Kurstjens showed that beavers could pose a significant risk in the dykes of the Schieland and Krimpenerwaard Water Board. Among other things, this region manages the lowest-lying polder in the Netherlands, at over 6.7 metres below NAP. The analysis provided insight into the burrowing locations of beavers and the potential dangers this poses to the flood defences.
